STAY ON TOP OF YOUR SUN PROTECTION GAME DURING WINTER!

Most people would not think we have to use sun protection during winter, and it is true that UV radiation is less intense this time of the year and you probably won’t get sunburnt, but the damaging rays still affect us.

The scientific answer to why we have to protect ourselves from the Sun during winter is that UVB rays responsible for sunburn have a shorter wavelength and are more powerful during summer, while UVA rays have a longer wavelength and stay with us throughout the entire year. You won’t get burnt during winter, but if you do not use any sun protection, you are exposed to UVA rays that may cause damage and premature ageing. Hence, it is important not to ditch sunscreen from your daily routine, especially if you are taking long walks, or engaging in winter sports and spending a significant amount of time outside. Always use a high factor cream, lip balm and a hydrating lotion!

Things to know about winter skincare:

• Radiation is higher up in the mountains, so if you are going skiing, sun care is a must. Bring creams and reapply them several times a day.

• Snow and ice reflect UV rays, which means the sunshine in winter is just as powerful. If you are staying in a snowy environment, use the highest SPF.

• Lips do not produce melanin, so they do not have a natural protection against the Sun. Use a lip balm to prevent chapping and dehydration.

• Some makeups may contain SPF, but that does not mean they replace sunscreen. Don’t forget to use an SPF cream before putting on makeup.

Tip: Browse through the BeautyPest Shop to find the best solution for your skin type. The Biologique Recherche PROTECTION U.V. SPF 50 is a great choice for maximum protection, and if you would rather go with MBR Cosmetics, the HIGH PROTECTION CREAM SPF 50 is the absolute best!

The fresh air is great for your skin and health, so spend as much time outside as possible, but keep in mind that your skin produces less melanin during winter, so it is more sensitive to UV radiation (this is especially true for light or easily pigmented skin).
